Carbon fibre is a polymer which
is a type of graphite. Graphite is one of the layers of pure
Carbon. In graphite, the carbon atoms are arranged in aromatic
hexagonal rings bound together as large sheets which look
like "metal mesh". In the case of Carbon fibres
these sheets are long and narrow and look very much like graphite
ribbons which are grouped together easily in bands to form
fibres, and hence the name carbon fibres.
These fibres are generally used to reinforce materials
such as epoxy resins and other thermosetting materials. These
reinforced materials are known as composite materials because
they contain more than a single component.
Composite materials reinforced with carbon fibre are
very strong with respect to their weight. Very often they
are stronger than steel, but much lighter.
